Artist Statement
Camilo Rojas is a Colombian-born, multidisciplinary designer and art director living and creating in Miami, FL. He combines traditional graphic design elements with typography, art, and experiential design to create compelling projects. His work is incredibly diverse—ranging from conventional brand identities to brilliantly typographic installations. He graduated from New World School of the Arts [University of Florida] in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and has been running his Studio CR-eate since 2011.
Roja’s work takes a critical view of social and cultural issues. Oftentimes, these themes are combined into installations characterized by a whimsical and meticulous reappropriation of everyday materials and handcrafted techniques. Typography is the starting point of his work, and he often experiments with it as an art form: regularly using words & letters as a visual medium. He seeks to represent the text in a new, creative way, whether it features traditional calligraphy, lettering, a sculpture, or an installation.
Camilo’s work also evolves in response to a given situation or environment. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. LEDs, mirrors, vinyl, neon, paint, found objects, mattresses, syringes, cigarettes, and yarn are just some of the materials used to incite reflection, inspire, motivate, enlighten, make a statement, or start a conversation. Camilo’s work has been featured globally in a wide range of art & design publications and exhibitions such as the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial 2016 in the United Arab Emirates, 100 Typographic Posters International Exhibition in China, Typography in Contemporary Art in Germany and international group exhibitions in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, Japan, Korea and the US
